Project 52:43 | Blessings

There has been a lot of heartache amongst friends and family lately. I know many of them are probably having a hard time seeing the blessings among the pain...I KNOW it is hard. However, I know that God doesn't leave us in times of need. In fact, if you let Him in you may find His arms around you. Sometimes the blessings are big and sometimes they are small, but they are there. For those of you currently going through trials of any kind, you are being prayed for and you are loved. Stand firm. God has great plans for you.

Project 52:42 | Rejuvenation

I'm back! I am so sad at how many Project 52 posts I have missed. I am really hoping I can post the past ones because I would really like to make this into a book in the end. Oh well, life happens.

Speaking of life..instead of getting ready for the church retreat I am heading to in 40 minutes and that I am not ready for (still have wet hair...) I am blogging. I am a great procrastinator. I always know that retreats and girls night are good for me, and yet I always have second thoughts when the time comes. I would happily just not go if I could. Ironically if you asked me if I thought I would have fun the answer would be yes. In fact, I didn't think I was going to be able to go to retreat this year and I was so sad because I remembered how much I loved last years retreat. And now, here I am, nervous to leave. I know the retreat will help me grow as a woman, wife, mom, sister, friend, etc....but I am so bad at leaving. I am not the one who wants to be away from my kids. I am so the opposite. BUT in the end I am going to come back raving about how great it was and so excited to snuggle my little family again. I hope you all have a chance to get away and be refreshed. It's good for the soul.

Love you all!

Project 52:30 | Forgiveness

I have had to say "sorry" to Eden a lot these past few weeks. She is wanting to test the boundaries a bit more, but mostly my patience is running thin. I love my girl so much and it pains me when I let her down.

Lately, I have felt like my mom duties were lacking. Curious George was played one too many times, I didn't take the time to read to her in the day, craft activities are pretty few and far between...basically I have felt like I was just one big complete failure. Yes, I am being hard on myself, and yet, while I am being honest, I know I am not giving her the best of me. So, after a little pow-wow sesh with the hubs, we figured out that having a little more structure and routine to our day may help Eden and I both. I loved teaching back when that was my major. For some reason though,  I haven't wanted to do that with Eden. I wanted to be able to just enjoy the day as it came. While that probably works for the majority of people, it turns out that I am not the best person I can be without some sort of routine. I have great intentions, but then it's 9 p.m. and time to get Eden ready for bed and I have realized that the moments where I was truly engaged with her are pretty hard to remember.

Now I am having a hard time planning my schedule. There are so many things that I want to get done in a day. How do I get in a workout, quiet time with the Lord, shower, clean, do laundry, make 3 meals a day for the family, spend time with the husband I rarely see, and get good quality time with my daughter? I realize that I may be trying to fit too much into a day, and yet all these things are important. I didn't even include some "me" time in there...but mostly because I realize I am seeing to need too much "me" time so I am trying to work on that selfish attitude I have lurking inside.

As you can see I am needing a bit of a release from all of this. If any of you have tips and tricks on how to fit everything in and not go crazy, please let me know! For now, it looks like Tot School is about to begin in this house...

**Sorry this is so late, we got to take a little trip up to Seattle over the weekend and I chose to stay away from the internet so my family could be my priority. It was a little tough, but I did it!

Project 52:29 | Comfort

Is that not the sweetest thing ever? I love that Eden is at an age where she knows her friends names and can play with them. She worries about them when they are sad, she follows what they do. I pray that she is blessed with friendships that lift her up.

I am thankful for the many friendships I have had over the years. Each one has meant something different to me. Some ended over time. Some ended up not really being much of a friend. And yet some are still around. They lift me up when I am down, they encourage me, they laugh with me. I treasure you, my friends. Thank you.

Time to head to the rehearsal of one of my good friends weddings. One who has been there for me when I wasn't much of a friend to her. One who keeps me from being too serious. Someone who pushed me to understand God's unconditional love. Pictures to come of her beautiful day I am sure!

Project 52:28 | Strength

Isn't God's creation amazing? During a recent trip to the zoo, we got to experience His creation in another way. We don't see bears, tigers, and elephants on a daily basis, so it is such a great moment when you can observe the animals, see the muscles ripple under their skin. I sat there watching thinking about how even though it feels like we are almost able to reach out and touch them, there is a very heavy layer of protection between us and the animals. These animals are strong. I thought about how most times I feel weak. I feel like I do not have what it takes to conquer another roller coaster in my life. And yet, God always lifts me up. He is able to show His power in our weakness. Every time I think I cannot take one more step, He is there. I am so thankful for that kind of protection, that kind of comfort, that kind of love.

Project 52:27 | inDEPENDENCE

What if we were to always be dependent upon God? What would it feel like to let go of that constant desire to be independent in all aspects of our lives, and embrace the fact that we can have a complete dependence on our Father. Choosing to love His constant presence and embracing it. Our very nature pushes us to be strong, in control, and not reliant on anyone, but God didn't design for His relationship with His children to be that way. When we are in full dependence on Him, that is when His blessings show through.

As our family has gone through a lot of trials within this past year one thing I have become more aware of is my complete need for God. I accepted Christ into my heart at four years old. I have loved Him every day since. However, it wasn't until recently where I began to actually let Him in. I would say, "I believe," BUT I refused to be reliant on anyone. My relationship with Him could not grow the way it was intended. He desires for us to need Him. Friends, I encourage you today...pray to let go of control...let God in! You will feel more free than you ever have before.

And a side note...is this not the most precious photo ever?! The love those two have for each other melts my heart into a puddle every day. I am so thankful for the connection those two have.

*I'm dealing with a very stubborn computer right now so :fingers crossed: I'll have some photos of our 4th to show you.

Project 52:26 | Teachable

My apologies for the super late post. Life was a little crazy last week (if you couldn't figure that out from the last P52 post). I made myself slow down this week and I am a better person for it. This isn't the best photo I have ever taken...it's messy, the composition is off, and so on. However, I just LOVED how intently Eden is listening to her cousin. Obviously Peyton has embraced her role as the oldest and Eden is just fine with that.

I think being teachable is a lot harder than we often will admit to. It is not that we are not willing to learn new things, but sometimes we get that feeling that we are "beneath" someone. I don't believe for a moment that the teacher feels this way, but it is easy to want to feel like we are in control and are smart and don't need someone else telling us everything. However, think of how much more one can learn if they just took a moment and let that wiser person teach them. I can only imagine that one would experience growth. There are so many wise people in our lives, let's not forget how important they are.

Or maybe I should say I need to remember how important they are. I can be quite stubborn you know. Such a surprise right?! To those that are around me on a consistent basis, they would laugh. I am extremely stubborn and someone who has a "I'll do it myself" mentality. I'm terrible at asking questions or letting people be a leader. I think I can do everything myself. Oh how much more would I learn if I would let others lead and teach me from time to time?

I'm working on it.

Project 52:25 | Overwhelmed

I've seen the signs for awhile. It started as a gentle whisper and has slowly turned into a very loud yell. I have a very strong tendency towards putting too much on my plate. I am by no means as busy as most people I know. I watch my friends and think "how do they do it all?!" Yet, I have realized that I have my own limit and every time I push myself too hard I break. It happened today (well it's been happening throughout the week). I found myself craving the sweet melodies of worship. I put my headphones in, turned on my favorite worship music radio station, and tuned out. The tears started falling. I couldn't stop them. I fell to the floor in my closet and let the sobs escape my lips. I gave up trying to pretend I was strong. I wanted to be able to do everything and I didn't want to let anyone down. I had so many people counting on me and it turns out by pushing myself and not ever saying no I have now gotten to a point where I am mostly useless. I need to pack for the weekend. I need to clean the house, and yet, I can't move. Literally my limbs were heavy and I couldn't pick myself up off the ground. I don't like feeling this way, especially when I have a sick toddler who needs me. Every time I kick myself for ignoring those gentle whispers, urging me to slow down, to lighten the load I was trying to carry by myself. I didn't listen. On top of all of that it's been a bit of an emotional week for our family. I know I always tell you how I want to be open and honest, but this is just something that needs to be between us for now. I'm sure it'll be shared when the timing is right, but for now I need to process in my own way.

Thanks for letting me pour my heart out on my blog. These Project 52 posts really are therapeutic and so very good for my soul. Each week I learn so much more about myself and my Savior. I feel like I see Him in a new light each day. I am loving growing with Him. I love knowing that even when I am so weary, He is taking on all of my burdens. Now I just need to let Him.

Project 52:24 | Fatherhood

Oh sorry. I kind of failed at getting this Project 52 up on time. I feel like life is just extremely overwhelming right now. In fact, I was thankful when Josh took the car away so I couldn't go on all of the errands I planned on running, because honestly, I NEEDED to be at home taking care of things. I am really working on saying 'no' and learning when I am overloading myself...but  for some reason my schedule keeps getting more hectic. Lame.

Well, as we all know yesterday was Father's Day. It may be a holiday for greeting card companies, but I am all for celebrating the daddies of this world. Plus I made my own card...so TAKE THAT card companies. Although Eden and I try to do something special for daddy every day because we love him, it's nice to have an excuse to spoil him just a bit more than usual. Sunday morning I made him cream cheese pancakes. Someone needs to stage an intervention, we are obsessed. There was also some homemade yogurt with berries there too. Then he was off to church early because he was handling the media for the morning.

After church we came home and relaxed. We gave daddy his present, which was a tool box full of BBQ tools. I am so thankful for a husband who LOVES to BBQ. Whenever he starts it up, he then begs me to find anything and everything to throw on there. The boy would BBQ chocolate if he could.

Then it was off to Claim Jumper with my parents where we met up with my brother and sister-in-law. I tried to get pictures of them playing with Eden (they are the world's best babysitters whenever we are out), but the lighting in there was terrible and it just didn't look great.

Obviously I had to have a photo shoot with the men of the hour.

And because I think this one is hilarious...I am including a (very terrible) photo of Eden. She is yelling "glassies!" at me. The girl loves to put sunglasses on everyone. This includes poor innocent cousin babies who come over to play. Sorry Hayley!

What a great day full of family and fun we had. Too bad we can't have ALL our family in one place ever. It just never works out that way. We missed you Dad #2 (or #1).

Hope you all enjoyed your weekend!

Project 52:23 | Marriage (And Our Love Story)

5 years. That's how long it's been since I walked down the aisle and became a wife. 5 years of bliss and utter craziness. Some days have been so hard, but most days have been absolutely wonderful. Josh and I are the first to tell you marriage hasn't been easy. As always we try to stay open and honest in hopes that it may just help someone else out there.

5 years ago we literally jumped into marriage. We met in August 2006 in our first class of our junior year of college. We had an instant connection. A couple weeks later I went to watch one of his soccer games (he played for the school) and was walking over to tell him how awesome he did when I saw another girl jump into his arms. I was defeated. Thankfully I had a friend there to remind me he and I were just friends...hardly even that, we had JUST met. I had no idea how much I cared for him until that moment. I had told myself over and over that I wasn't going to let it go anywhere...I didn't want a boyfriend and I most certainly didn't want to even think of having a SERIOUS relationship with anyone. I had been hurt, very badly, by a boy a couple years prior and I had decided that marriage and relationships weren't for me (sidenote: that boy is a great guy, it's just the two of us together were a disaster).

Oh how wrong I was.

On October 31 we became a couple (don't worry Josh had broken up with his girlfriend shortly after that game...I'm not a boyfriend stealer!). We watched scary movies, carved pumpkins, and were quite attached to each other. It was moving so fast,  but I just couldn't help it, I knew he was the one for me.

On November 6 we both had written letters (unbeknownst to one another) stating that we loved each other.

Within a few days we both saw those letters and said it for real.

On December 21 (after a loooooooong flight back from Europe where I had been with friends) Josh took me to a dock on Capitol Lake in Olympia and got down on one knee.

I said YES!

On June 6, 2007 we were MARRIED.

Then life started. I had gone through some counseling to work through my past issues. I wanted to be proactive before we got married knowing that my past relationship was still very much a part of me. It wasn't enough. God needed us to work through it together and break those barriers. The first year and a half was the hardest and worst time of my life in some ways. I'm so thankful it was Josh I was going through it with, but I was scared, hurt, and a complete mess. I said words I never thought I would say, I did things I never thought I would do...I didn't even know who I was anymore. All of my past bubbled up into someone who was so hurt and confused that she couldn't even let her own husband in. I was in my own dark world.

The good news is, this story has a happy beginning (we have many more years before I can say ending). After years of tears, counseling, reading, and lots and lots of prayer...we broke through the barriers. We started to understand our differences. We embraced them. The most important thing for us was that Josh never quit on me. I tried quitting..I wanted out (or so I thought). I just didn't want to deal with the hard stuff. HE NEVER LEFT.

Our biggest advice to our friends as they get ready to walk down the aisle is always to stick it out. Don't run. Don't leave each other. Your marriage is sacred and needs to stay between you. And please, please, please don't go back to your parents (unless of course there is a safety issue, but for that I think you'll need even more help). We are asked to "leave and cleave" and honestly it hinders your relationship with your spouse and your family. I'm not trying to preach here, just telling you what we have learned so far.

If you are more of a reading type...we had great success with the Love Dare. It is hard, but we learned a lot.

Don't feel bad if you have to go to counseling. Even if it's the day after your wedding. Marriage isn't easy. You are bringing two lives together.

Some of you may not have had a hard time adjusting to marriage and that's awesome! I know those couples and love them dearly and am so thankful for great examples of what marriage can be like when we let go of our expectations and just enjoy the greatest bond we have on this earth.

If you want to chat more with me about our story or anything please don't hesitate. thecrainsnest[at]gmail[dot]com. I am more than willing to share more...just not right here on the blog :)

We are a success story and want everyone else to be too. We believe so fully in marriage. Some days we wake up, look at one another, and just shake our heads in disbelief at how far we have come. Josh is a wonderful man, husband, and father...happy 5 years babe!

Project 52:22

Quiet is not a word most would use to describe me. It is not my strongest attribute. While I crave quiet and peace and rest I rarely let myself be still. When I sit, I feel the need to do something. It may be as simple as zoning out into blogland, but my hands and my head never stop. I know I need those quiet moments of reflection, but I find that for me, I do my reflecting as I am working...washing dishes, vacuuming, dusting...that's just how I work. My biggest struggle is where this leaves me in my relationship with God. I CRAVE that time, but never seem to get around to it. I make myself so busy with life that I forget about the most important relationship that I have. I know better. I know that when I am spending one on one time with my Father, that all of my relationships will thrive because of it. I am such a better wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend when I am cultivating my most important relationship. Why is it that the best thing for me is the one that gets stuck at the end of the my to-do list each day?

I am ready for the quiet.

Project 52:21 | Self-Control

Josh and I are in the midst of a health and fitness challenge called "May Madness." We have loved every minute of it...except the time where my whole family ate a giant mud pie while we sat and watched and the time that we went to a food show where we couldn't taste test anything except a piece of fruit, tea, and greek yogurt. Seriously though it has been such a wonderful experience! I have kind of mentioned the fact that we have changed our eating habits quite a lot once before, but I still need to go into more detail. I have had a LOT of questions on the subject and I really want to be able to give you some information so you can decide if it is the right thing for you. Basically we have gone back to eating the way they would back in the good old prairie days. Think Laura Ingalls Wilder. Obviously we do still enjoy the modern conveniences of today, but we do also try to incorporate a lot of the old practices. We started with making a few changes and now are quite deep in the throws of it all...soaking, fermenting, raw milk...you name it, we are up to trying it.

All this to say that we have really understood how important it is to take care of the one body God gave us. We feel so much more energized now that we are eating the way He intended for us to eat and are also spending a great deal of time being active. Not only have the changes to our body been significant, but watching Eden imitate our workout moves has made us so excited for her future. The girl loves her technology, so to see that she also loves to run and jump and play makes us believe that she will value an active and healthy lifestyle. Try making a change or two and see how it affects you and/or your family. We are quickly finding that piece of mud pie to really not be all that appealing anymore.

I'll be back with more regarding the changes we have made over the past 9 months!

Project 52:20 | Motherhood

I cheated. While I had set up my camera's settings, Josh actually took this photo. I figured it was okay to cheat for this purpose.

During Mother's Day this year I reflected more on what it means to be a mom than I ever have. Here I am holding the daughter I so longed for, and yet there are so many out there that are still holding their arms out, empty and aching.

One thing that hit me really hard was thinking to when we adopt in the future. I had always looked at it as US getting OUR baby. While yes, we will celebrate and love on that little one like you've never seen, but what about that child's birth mother? The one that went through 9 months of carrying that child. The one that labored for hours until the child made its grand appearance into the world. The one that had to make the hardest decision of her life...to let go. I had never really thought about her. This all just broke my heart over the past few weeks. I know its OBVIOUS that the child had to have a birth mother and of course I knew that, but I just didn't think about how much that one woman will impact our whole family. Will she ache for the child she had to give up? Will she wonder what it is like for her child to be growing up in a new place with a new family? We never want to discount the fact that our child has a birth mother. We want to always pray for her and respect the questions our future child may have. With the love that I have for my daughter, I can only try to imagine just how painful Mother's Day must be for many women. Women who loved their babies and women who want to have babies to love.

Mother's Day is a wonderful celebration and I am so thankful that we could celebrate all of the mom's out there, but I am starting to look at it with a new perspective. I see those of you that are hurting and I want you to know that you are loved and you are prayed for.

Project 52:19 | Discovery

Having a child gives you a whole new sense of the word "discovery." Watching a child learn something new is such an exciting process. Josh and I daily are amazed at the things Eden learns. Every single day she says a new word or does something she hasn't done before. We try so hard to let her learn about life at her own pace and in her own way. Sometimes her discovery might be messy, sometimes it means watching her struggle, but in the end she is the one pushing herself to try...to learn something new.

It is so hard not to step in sometimes and help her as she fumbles with the puzzle piece. She is so very close to putting it in correctly, but it just won't turn the exact way she needs it to. She lets out a frustrated sound, sometimes a tear falls from her eyes, but each time we try to stand back and see how she will solve the problem. Sometimes it just takes her another minute until the puzzle settles into it's perfectly shaped hole. Sometimes, however, she looks to us with pleading eyes and says, "help me!" And so we do. We give her some prompting on how to fix the situation and then together we place that darn puzzle piece that has eluded it's space for so long. We give a high five and put on a big smile. She is so proud. I love that.

So, go out and try something new. Instead of walking with your eyes downward, look up. You never know what you are going to discover.

Project 52:18 | Relationships

My sister moved away again. To Eden it's Aunt B. Eden loves her some Aunt B. Oh my. We always list off all of her families names to her and she repeats each one, but there is always special emphasis on "Beeeeeeeeee!" I think she likes her because she is the Aunt that sneaks her candy and gives her purses and wallets full of money is close by and adores her and makes her laugh and takes her on crazy adventures. Thankfully her Auntie is only 4 hours away now so it's still driving distance.

Today she asked about her and we had to talk about how she has moved away. I know she doesn't really get it and yet she totally acted as if she knew. She knows that when someone lives far away it doesn't mean that they don't love her. She loves all of her cousins, aunts, uncles, grandmas, grandpas, and so forth, all the same. This girl LOVES her family. I love watching her with the people she loves. She has a different way of interacting which each person. She knows which grandparent loves to tickle her, which one loves her hugs, which one sneaks her candy when her parents aren't looking. She treasures each one of them for their own specific reasons. I love the way she thinks.

Watching Eden has so challenged me to treasure the family and friends that I have. Each one of them is so unique. In fact, it wasn't too long ago that I was chatting away about how different each of my friends are. I never had one specific group of friends, I always had many. Each group of friends meant something different to me and yet, I loved them all the same. I have the friends that make me laugh until I cry. The friends I share my deepest secrets with. The friends that I went on adventures with. The friends that challenged me in my faith. The friends that constantly stood behind me as I made so many poor choices over the years and loved me just the same. I love my friends. I love my family. They are so very unique and yet so perfectly perfect. I know that no matter where we all go, we will always come back to each other. I love that.

To my sister...we loved having you around and will miss you so much, but are so glad you are excited for your next adventure!

Why, yes I do make my sister do an impromptu photo shoot before she is allowed to leave the house. So a fair warning to you all, you may be subject to my inner photographer and you may just have to play model if you come over. There, warning has been given.

Project 52:17 | Steadfast

I've never really thought about this word before. I've seen it in the Bible, I have heard it in church, it's in songs, but I never truly grasped what STEADFAST means to me. When I was looking through the photos I took, this one stood out. I am a lover of vintage...I love the charm that it holds. My house is 82 years old and you can see every bit of precious detail that went into it. That detail is something we just do not see much in newer homes and other things.

I look at this bridge and despite the fact that it has grown worn with age, it just looks so strong. I have no idea how many years it has been there, but I can tell it's been there for quite some time. Every little crack shows me that this bridge LOVES its job. It does not mind the years of abuse from constant traffic, in fact it thrives from it.

I think about this in the way that God loves me. I am not always perfect and sometimes I forget to thank Him for the things He has done...sometimes I feel angry that something has happened to me and I let go of some of that anger on Him. Yet, God is always there. He loves me. He loved me when I didn't love myself. He loved me when I was angry, heart broken, and riddled with despair. He will accept me with open arms the day that I go home. And that, my dear friends, is what STEADFAST really looks like.

Thank you all for your patience with my Project 52 post from last week. It has been crazy. Between the sicknesses and the loss of internet I finally conceded and realized that sometimes it's better to let something go. So, here I am, feeling a million times more like myself and with functioning internet! YAY! Hope you all had a more enjoyable week than we did over at the Crain household :)

Project 52:16 | Independence

It seems that the moment that Eden turned 18 months she suddenly became quite independent. Obviously she still needs Josh and I, but she is in a "let me do it myself" phase (a phase that I think will last the rest of her life). Honestly, I have no problem with this. I love watching her learn and grow. She puts herself in her own carseat (no need to fret, we buckle her in!). Every time I open the dishwasher she is right next to be pulling out each dish for me to put away. She picks out and puts on her own shoes...usually 7 or more times a day. It just amazes me how she went from being a completely dependent newborn to a semi-independent toddler so quickly. I hope to continue to foster her independence while always showing her that I am right here if she needs me.

So...this was my first Project 52 post without my beloved Picnik. There was a definite learning curve trying to figure out how to maneuver the new program I finally found to somewhat replace Picnik. After a whole lot of searching iPiccy ended up being the winner. While I actually prefer the look and feel of PicMonkey for editing, until they get the collage feature that they are promising, I am going to be using iPiccy. It had most of the same features of our dearly departed program, but had a lot less "extras". There were some features that, dare I say it, were better than Picnik. No matter what I am HORRIBLE when it comes to change and prefer to stick to my old ways thankyouverymuchgoogleforgettingridofmyfavoritefreeeditingsoftware. Good for you if you could actually read that.

Anyway, I am off to get some beauty rest. I have a VERY early day tomorrow. One in which I have to be AWAKE, COHERENT, and HALF DECENT looking by 6 a.m. I honestly haven't seen that time much in a very long time. Well, not willingly anyway. Curious why I am getting up at such an indecent hour? MOPS leadership summit. I am actually pretty excited about it! MOPS was something I always dreamed about being a part of before I had Eden and I have really enjoyed getting to participate this year! Alright, for real, I'm getting some sleep.

Oh wait..maybe I should mention...I have become completely obsessed with Instagram. I have had the app for quite awhile, but never really understood the social networking aspect. I just want to edit my photos in peace people! Then I started realizing that it's kind of fun and now I can't stop. My name is malmal3 if you want to find me. See you there.
